Crowdfunding Goal Nears for Ovrdrive USB Stick with Data-Hiding and Self-Destruct Features

A USB stick that can self-destruct and hide data has almost reached its crowdfunding goal. The Ovrdrive USB flash drive, created by Ryan Walker of Interrupt Labs, is designed to prioritize privacy and is available for crowdfunding on Crowd Supply. One of its key features is the ability to hide the drive’s partition when plugged in normally, making it appear broken. However, if inserted quickly three consecutive times, the read/write functionality is activated.

Initially, the plan was for the drive to destroy itself, but this proved difficult to reproduce during large-scale manufacturing. Nevertheless, the self-destruction circuitry has been retained in its original state for the final product, allowing users to activate it if desired.

The Ovrdrive’s circuitry can heat the flash chip to 100 degrees Celsius, although this temperature may not be enough to destroy the chip. However, it can serve as a catalyst for a DIY “self-destruct” implant that buyers can design, build, and place inside the enclosure. The feature is disabled by default to prevent accidental activation.

The drive is particularly useful for journalists working in hostile environments, security researchers, hardware hackers, and individuals interested in open hardware. In countries like Iran where encryption preventing unauthorized access is outlawed, Ovrdrive can provide valuable protection. However, Walker emphasizes that the drive should be used alongside encryption in locations where it is allowed, rather than as a replacement.

The Ovrdrive USB flash drive is expected to launch in August 2024 with a price tag of $69 and free shipping ($12 for international shipping). The crowdfunding campaign has already raised $2,922 of its $3,500 goal, reaching 83% funding with 24 days remaining.
