Crowdfunding Goal Approached by USB Drive with Self-Destruct Capability

An open-source USB stick that can destroy itself and hide data has almost reached its crowdfunding goal. The Ovrdrive USB flash drive, created by Ryan Walker of Interrupt Labs, features a unique privacy function that conceals the drive’s partition when plugged in normally. However, if the drive is inserted quickly three consecutive times, the read/write functionality is activated. Although the initial plan was for the drive to self-destruct, this feature proved difficult to reproduce in large quantities. Nevertheless, the self-destruction circuitry remains in the final product for those who wish to use it. The Ovrdrive’s circuitry can also heat the flash chip to 100 degrees Celsius, potentially acting as a catalyst for a DIY “self-destruct” implant. The feature is disabled by default to prevent accidental activation. The drive is designed for journalists, security researchers, hardware hackers, and individuals interested in open hardware. It may be particularly useful in countries where encryption is prohibited. The Ovrdrive is expected to launch in August 2024 with a price of $69 and free shipping. The crowdfunding campaign has already raised $2,922 of its $3,500 goal, reaching 83% funding with 24 days remaining.
