Unihertz Jelly Max is a small phone with a big(ger) display (crowdfunding) - Liliputing

At a time when smartphone displays have gotten so big that it can be hard to tell the difference between a big phone and a small tablet, Unihertz continues to sell a line of small-screen phones under its Jelly line of products. Some have screens so small that they’re barely usable.

The new Unihertz Jelly Max doesn’t suffer from that problem. With a 5 inch display, it’s the biggest Jelly phone to date. But it’s still small enough to operate with a single hand. It’s now available for pre-order through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, and phones are expected to ship to backers in October.

While there’s usually a little risk involved in crowdfunding campaigns, Unihertz has a pretty good track record for releasing real products… although they tend to vary in terms of hardware quality and long-term support. I have little reason to doubt that the company will deliver the Jelly Max. I’m less certain that the phone, which ships with Android 14, will ever see a major software update.

In terms of hardware, the phone has:

  • Display: 5.05 inches, 1520 x 720 pixels
  • Processor: MediaTek Dimensity 7300 (4 x Cortex-A78, 4 x Cortex-A55, Mali-G615)
  • RAM: 12GB LPDDR5
  • Storage: 256GB UFS 3.1 + microSD card reader
  • Battery: 4,000 mAh
  • Charging: 66W (90% charge in 20 minutes)
  • Cameras: 100MP primary, 8MP telephoto (3.4X) + 32MP front
  • Security: Fingerprint sensor
  • Wireless: 5G dual-SIM (Support for Verizon & T-Mobile), WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, FM Radio

Other features include an infrared remote that allows you to use the phone to control a TV or other devices and a Jelly Max button, which can be configured to launch a favorite app or smartphone feature.

The phone measures 128.7 x 62.7 x 16.3mm (5.07″ x 2.47″ x 0.64″) and features transparent curved edges. Unihertz says it also has a 50% higher screen-to-body ratio than the Unihertz Jelly Star (which has a 3 inch display and a 2,000 mAh battery).

The Jelly Max is expected to sell for $339 after crowdfunding ends, but Kickstarter backers can reserve one for discounted prices. At time of publication, the lowest price available is about $239.
